Legendary Items

I am currently using a level 65 third age bow from Siege of Mirkwood.  It had about 12 more DPS then my level 60 2nd age bow from Moria.  I’m also leveling up 3 level 65 crossbows.  I’m hoping one of them has better legacies then the bow because I want to try out a crossbow for awhile.  I want to switch to a spear for my melee LI weapon just because I like the looks of them.  Capron is around level 55ish and Afastr is around 45ish last I looked.  They need to hurry up and get to level 62ish so they can do Sword Halls, Warg Pens and Sammuth Gul with the rest of the Fellowship!  I added more funny stuff from Capron in the lotro funnies section.  Check it out!

Merry Christmas from Sammuth Gul

4/6th of the Viking Fellowship beat Sammuth Gul tonight, with two pick up groupies.  Redranth, Nindrojrir, Canum and Beowyf defeated all 4 bosses in the 6-man instance.  The third boss Gorothul gave us a little trouble but we got better each try until we beat him.  We got him down to 40k morale, 30k morale, 20k morale, then finally on the 4th try we beat him.  He has a nasty knockback and he also casts fear on people.  After getting him down 1/2 his morale his buddies start showing up out of the woodwork and keep on coming.  It was a fun fight and it felt awesome to beat him.  Canum did a great job on crowd control duty in the dungeon, which is much needed!  Check out the Nazgul outside the large window!

Beowyf finally broke down and deconstructed his old level 60 2nd age bow “Lucky”.  He is using a level 65 3rd age now which has alot more DPS.  Beowyf also rearranged some gear and virtues raising his power from 1900 last week to 2600 this week.  Nice little jump in power!  MMO Viking has been thinking about trying the 12-man raid with his Kinship next time they try it.  Beowyf has 120 radiance now, I think thats the number required.  I haven’t raided in MMO’s in along time.  I really got burned out on raiding way back in Everquest with the high end 54-man raids and haven’t raided since.  12-man sound way more reasonable though!  “Merry Christmas to all!” sez Santa-Beo!

Sammath Gul

The Viking Fellowship finally all got together for the six-man instance in Dol Guldur.  Very rare occurrence lately to get all 6 members of the fellowship of the same level range playing at the same time.  The only one not level 65 was Canum.  O the shame!  Canum is currently level 64, slacker.  This was our first time attempting it and we made it past the first two bosses before Canum’s bedtime of I think he said 10:30 pm.  10:30 on a friday night?  Cmon!!  You’re killing us man.  We all blamed it on Capron though for not being level 65 yet.  Capron is level 51 at the moment running around deep in the Mines of Moria complaining about the Y axis.  One funny thing in Sammath Gul is bone piles.  If you step on a bone pile it will spawn a ghost that summons skeletons.  This always leads to “argh!  who stepped in the pile?!”  Usually Canum but I think Borthos and Red admitted to 1 each.  I’m thinking next time we go I run Beowyf over 6 piles at once and then run them to the group.  First I’d get Nindrojrir in tells to offer me a little silver.  Nin is always down for cruel jokes!  Beating bosses for the first time is always fun times.  I’m looking forward to going again and beating the whole thing.

Guest blogger Capron writes:

In a species otherwise characterized only by its competition with others of its own kind for the necessities of procreation, an aberration has emerged. Due to an evolutionary mutation made possible only by eons of random chance, two previously distinct basic organisms Fugligo Septica and Armillaria Ostoyae fused to form a terrible new creature. A brief scientific background follows.

Fugligo Septica — Commonly known as “The Dog Vomit Fungus” is actually not a fungus at all but a slime mold often found growing in mulched areas around homes and in forests. When young, the mold “is often bright yellow, and in some instances, sickly orange. The colorful growth occurs when the mold is beginning its fruiting stage (see post about Annuminas Armor) . . . Like many humans, the mold matures into a harder, larger mass that loses much of its bright attractive color. Although still able to project fear in some people at this stage, it becomes harder to notice (and resorts to screaming “BEOSMASH” in order to make up for this new inadequacy). During the next stage, the slime mold becomes crusty and uninviting.”

Armillaria Ostoyae – World’s largest living Organism
Currently believed to be the world’s largest living organism, this humungous fungus covers over 2,200 acres in eastern Oregon and is believed to be between 2,400 and 7,200 years old. Upon sampling “Honey Mushrooms” over several disparate areas in the forest, scientists were astonished to find that these mushrooms were not distinct organisms, but surface manifestations of one huge fungus living beneath the forest floor. This fungus is responsible for countless tree deaths as it uses tiny tentacles called rhizomorphs to steal water and nutrients from nearby vegetation

The fusion of these two species is made possible by the little known fact that, unlike humans who have only two, fungi have over 36,000 different sexes. At some point, 10-15 years in the past, what must have been a particularly unattractive specimen of Fuglio Septica apparently wandered into an Oregon campground with a 36-pack of wine coolers. From that ungodly union sprang Beo-aria Septica (named by scientists who observed that after ingesting samples of the new species, lab techs manifested projectile vomiting accompanied by an uncontrolled evacuation of their bowels).

Beo-aria is, like its maternal forebearer, a conglomerate paradox of single-celled orgamisms which have found a new evolutionary viability in pooling their resources in order to deprive their competitors from scarce necessities and thereby thrive. This phenomenon is known as lewt-whoring. Beo-aria is responsible for the gradual economic death of those around him as he uses his lootwhoromorphs to steal resources from those foolish enough to maintain a close proximity (see EQ funnies).

Like Fuglio, Beo-aria delights in displaying colorful outfits in certain distinct stages of its development. Scientists familiar with both organisms have aptly termed this the Beo-aria’s “Fruity” stage, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the “Fruiting” stage of its ancestor. Beo-aria, however, having inherited an uncommonly long life, is not limited to one such fruity stage, but can manifest this gender-confused tendency with little to no warning. Introducing an elf of any kind into Beo’s immediate environment is almost certain to result in such a blossoming.

What makes the Beo so unique is the deceptive appearance of coherent thought that it seems to have developed as a defense mechanism in response to natural predators. Scientists can only hypothesize, but prevalent theories in leading scholarly journals have opined that, the Beo-aria developed both its bipedal movement and speech patterns in an attempt to blend it with its only competitors in the wild – man, dwarf, and hobbit.

One of Beo’s most disconcerting characteristics is the ability to confound these competitors by preying on their most effective evolutionary survival developments – rational thought. The Beo-aria insidiously appears to participate in a similar thinking process (as certain butterflies have developed large dark markings on their wings which appear to be monstrous eyes to their predators) but then undercuts the ability in those around it, by injecting entire strings of nonsense words and sounds into its predators’ immediate environment. This often results in a mental crippling of the unfortunate subject that can strip it of any and all desire to argue or communicate and leaving it without its most effective survival tool, thereby rendering it largely helpless. It is often at this very juncture that the above referenced lootwhoromorphs liberate the Beo’s victim from anything shiny or of value.

Still enjoying Siege of Mirkwood

I’ve been knocking out skirmishes and 3-man sword hall instances lately.  Skirmishes are still fun and there is still alot of stuff to get from the tokens including pumping up Beowyf’s soldier Beobo.  Redranth beat me to getting his soldier to rank 20.  But the good news is I will just keep Beobo rank 19 and spend the skirmish marks elsewhere.  Nin, Canum and Beowyf did sword halls a couple times tonight.  Beowyf the Hunter tank strikes again.  MMO Viking wants the hammer that drops from there for Beowyf’s offhand.  In non-related lotro news, the new Ironman 2 trailer is out and it is badass.  Ironman and Warmachine look awesome.  Lots of good actors in it.  I can’t wait to see it.

The Lore-master

Canum is the viking fellowship’s Lore-master.  Lore-masters are a pet class that do debuffs and can give members of the fellowship power when needed.  Which is a lot with Redranth!  I’ve known Canum a long time since our Noble Rage days playing Everquest.  He was our second best wizard in the guild behind Nindakin.  Nin took him under his wing and taught him the ways of doing crazy huge redonkulus nukes in EQ.  Anyway Canum provides us with a lot of jokes at his expense because he is playing a female character.  This is called being a Shim.  People that play shims have many excuses.  One is they would rather look at a girl’s ass all day in 3rd person then a dudes.  Another is that guys playing MMOs will treat them nicer and maybe even give them free stuff because they think they are an actual girl.   MMO Viking thinks any reason is inexcusable!  If you are a dude in real life, don’t play a girl on your MMO!  Not cool!  Only women playing MMOs should play women characters.  You might think Beo has been burned in the past by a shim.  This is incorrect.  Beo does his research before giving away free stuff and chatting up women in MMOs.  Anyway Canum is an easy target for jokes in the fellowship, with guys saying they are checking out his rack and etc.  Canum, Borthos and Adanther all know each other in real life which is cool.  Ada is Canum’s cousin and Borthos is Canum’s best friend / roommate.  Scionof, who I haven’t introduced yet is Canum’s real life father.  This is all very cool.  I actually started playing LOTRO because my brother Hask wanted me to play with him.  He doesn’t play nearly as much as I do but we have fun when I do catch him online.  Hask and I both have lifetime subscriptions to lotro so I am sure we will be playing this in 10 years still off and on.  Congrats Canum on hitting level 64 today, 1 more to go!

Sword Hall of Dol Guldur

The Viking Fellowship put the smack down on the Sword Hall of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood on hardmode last night.  It was awesome.  Redranth tanked, Nindrojrir healed and DPS’ed when able, and Beowyf DPS’ed like crazy the whole time.  Hardmode means you must take on all 3 bosses at once and beat them within I think 20 minutes or a bunch of additional mobs come and make things very difficult.  It might of been the coolest thing we have accomplished in lotro so far.  Very satisfying.  Red and Beo both got the +25 rad helms from Dol Guldur token turn ins.  Redranth made level 65 yesterday too, congrats Red.  Next on our list is the new 6-man dungeon that we haven’t tried yet.  It’s hard for us to get Adanther, Borthos and expecially Canum all on at the same time as us.  So we will probably recruit 1 or 2 members of the Kinship when we try it.  In other news Red and Beo both have thier Archer soldiers at tier 19 working on 20.  It might be a race to max them out.  Beowyf’s soldier is Beobo, Beowyf’s mother’s brother.  Nindrojrir is Beowyf’s son.  So Beobo is Nindrojrir’s great uncle.  Redranth’s soldier is Neecrol named after an old EQ / WoW playing buddy.  I think Neecrol is still playing World of Warcraft, it’s a shame.  Nindrojrir’s soldier is a herbalist named Smartbeo.  I think he might be related to Beowyf in some manner too.  MMO Viking is going to insist Nin refer to Beobo as Uncle Beobo.

The Guardian

Adanther the Guardian is the next member of the Viking Fellowship I am going to talk about.  After Beowyf and Nindrojrir, Adanther might have the third most actual lotro gameplay time.  Which means a couple things.  The best thing is he is around to help out and will do so whenever asked.  Another thing this means is like Beo and Nin he doesn’t have much of a real life!  Just kidding about that last part, well kinda.  When Ada and Borthos first started playing lotro we yelled at them for both picking guardians, because we already had our Fellowship tank Redranth.  Borthos finally relented and made a Rune Keeper thank Thor.  I make fun of Ada sometimes for being a guardian and not the main tank, with comments like “Hey Ada summon me”  as if he was a captain and etc.  But I have come to realize he does come in useful as the 2nd Tank of the fellowship, great for off tanking especially when there is 2 boss monsters at once.  Also he helped me on one of my final epic quests in Moria when Red wasn’t around which was awesome.   Adanther is another of the X-Everquest crew from Prexus.  In Everquest he played a Frog Cleric which was funny and I enjoyed.  Ada has sworn to never play a healer since though.  Beowyf is jealous of Adanther for a couple things.  Ada gets to wear cool heavy plate armor and gets to wield a huge bad ass two-handed hammer.  MMO Viking loves battle hammers.  Adanther should of been a dwarf but that’s ok.  Being the race of man, the largest playable free person race, the hammer he wields is giganormous.  Seriously that thing would weigh 95 lbs in real life.  Adanther you should name your hammer something cool like “KICK-ASS”.

Epic storyline

I continued the new Mirkwood epic quest line last night with Nindrojrir’s urging.  He claims I get to fire a ballista.  MMO Viking is all for using siege equipment.  The story is very cool.  I’m actually enjoying it more then the Mines of Moria epic quest line.  That’s blasphemy I know I love dwarves.  Nin somehow got Kindred to the Malledhrim in Mirkwood yesterday.  I don’t know how but I think he is a witch!  Beo is still on ally faction with them.  Anyway the Mirkwood epic questline is very very good.  I think it’s cool how Mirkwood is always foggy / mirky but when you get to certain points of the quest and do the instances, it’s night and clear with a huge full moon.  Very creepy and you feel something is going to happen, something dreadful.  Beowyf would describe it as a feeling deep in his dwarf gut that the shit is going to hit the fan.

Ding 65

Beowyf dinged level 65 last night with Adanther and Nindrojrir in close second at level 64.  That means the three of us out leveled Capron by thirteen levels the past week.  This makes MMO Viking sad!  C’mon cappy don’t stall out now!  After making it to the level cap I fast traveled around the various Malledhrim camps in Mirkwood trying to find my new potion recipes.  I found them at the large fort in the middle of Mirkwood.   The fort has two names.  The first is Minas Celebolf which means Minas=Tower and Celebolf=golden flower, so Tower of the golden flower.  The second name is Ost Galadh which means Ost=Fortress and Galadh=tree, so Fortress of the tree.  I’m thinking the Malledhrim renamed it Ost Galadh when they took it over recently.  This is Beowyf’s new home-base.  No more 21st hall for Beo.  Beo found the malledhrim acquaintance faction vendors here.  So I traded in the tokens and got Beo the new Malledhrim-faction Morale, Power, Fear, Wound, Disease, and Poison potions.  Beo has been making some cash from his alchemy lately.  I am really glad a switched from explorer.  Everyone always needs potions!  Also I’ve gotten the new battle scrolls recipes and the new improved bow-chant breach finder recipe.  Cool stuff.  Ost Galadh has a large crafting hall inside it, not small like the Mines of Moria 21st hall one.  And the crafting hall even has a bank inside it!  Only thing missing is an auction house in it but that’s asking too much I’m sure.  I discovered also that there is a Skirmish trainer and captain in our neighborhood of Barleywick in the Shire.  I thought that was kind of cool.  Here’s a screenshot of Beowyf the Alchemist making potions in the Tree-Fort crafting hall.
